This process is primarily used to produce purified drinking water. It is also used in the production of liquid water enhancers and powdered drink mixes where a clean, neutral water base is desired.

Water purified by reverse osmosis is considered safe for consumption. The FDA does not specifically regulate this process but oversees the safety of bottled water. International bodies like the WHO have not raised concerns about water purified by this method. The process removes minerals, which some argue could be a downside, but these can be obtained from other food sources.
