Purified Filtered Carbonated Water

Purified filtered carbonated water is water that has undergone a purification process, such as filtration or distillation, and then had carbon dioxide gas added to it. This process creates the "fizz" or bubbles found in sparkling water and other carbonated beverages. It is essentially water infused with carbonation.

Manufacturers use purified filtered carbonated water as the base for a wide variety of beverages, including sparkling water, seltzer, club soda, and some soft drinks. It provides the refreshing effervescence and mouthfeel that consumers associate with these drinks. It can also be used as a mixer for alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Purified filtered carbonated water is generally considered safe to consume. The FDA does not specifically regulate it as a food additive, as it is essentially purified water with added carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is naturally present in the environment and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a food ingredient. While some people report bloating or gas after consuming carbonated beverages, this is typically a physical effect of the dissolved gas and not a health concern for most individuals. JECFA has evaluated carbon dioxide and found no safety concerns.
