How we rate foods

Product pages

Nutrition and ingredient numbers on product pages come from USDA FoodData Central (Branded Foods), normalized to a common per-100 g or per-100 ml basis. We cap implausible values before they appear in rankings or filters. The label on the package is always authoritative if it differs.

Best-of rankings

Lists under Best packaged foods by nutrition rank visible products using stored per-100 g values. Each page states its name or category filters, sort column, direction and tie-break (for example higher protein when calories tie). Products whose macronutrients sum to an impossible total per 100 g are skipped.

Healthier swaps

We compare per-100 g values from the nutrition database. A swap must be at least as good on sugars, saturated fat, sodium, calories, protein and fiber (where listed) and strictly better on at least one of those nutrients. Check the label for your portion size.

Diet and filter lists

Pages under Diet and Nutrition filters select products using rules shown on each list (for example ≤10 g carbohydrates per 100 g for keto-friendly). These are algorithmic views of label data, not certifications — always check the package.

Ingredient flags

Product pages may show neutral ingredient chips (for example, “Contains aspartame”) parsed from ingredient and allergen text. List pages support exclude filters; filtered URLs are not indexed. See the dedicated ingredient flags page for matching rules. Ingredient & additive flags
