Aronia Berry Juice Concentrate

Aronia berry juice concentrate is made from the juice of aronia berries, also known as chokeberries. These berries are native to North America and are known for their deep purple color and tart flavor. The juice is concentrated by removing water, intensifying its flavor and color.

Manufacturers use aronia berry juice concentrate primarily for its intense color and tart flavor. It can be added to beverages like juices, smoothies, and flavored waters to provide a natural deep red or purple hue and a tangy taste. It is also found in some frozen fruit products and fruit blends.

Aronia berry juice concentrate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a food ingredient. It is a source of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which are responsible for its deep color. JECFA and EFSA have not specifically evaluated aronia berry juice concentrate for safety limits. Research into the health effects of aronia berries is ongoing, with some studies suggesting potential benefits related to heart health, but more research is needed to confirm these effects at typical consumption levels.
