Blue 1 Lake Blue 1

Blue 1 (also known as Brilliant Blue FCF) is a synthetic color additive made from petroleum. Blue 1 Lake is an insoluble form of Blue 1, created by combining the dye with a metallic salt, often aluminum.

Manufacturers add Blue 1 and Blue 1 Lake to provide a vibrant blue color to foods. They are commonly found in candies, powdered drink mixes, chewing gum, and baked goods.

Blue 1 is an FDA-approved color additive. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Blue 1. JECFA has evaluated Blue 1 and set an acceptable daily intake. EFSA has also evaluated it and established an acceptable daily intake. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food dyes and hyperactivity in some children, but the evidence is mixed, and more research is ongoing.
