Carnaubawax

Carnauba wax is a hard, waxy substance derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree (Copernicia prunifera), native to Brazil. The leaves are dried, and the wax is obtained by beating them to loosen the wax, which is then collected and refined.

Manufacturers use carnauba wax as a glazing or polishing agent to give foods a shiny appearance and to prevent sticking. It helps to create a protective coating on candies, baked goods like cakes and cupcakes, and snack cakes, contributing to their texture and shelf life.

Carnauba wax is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a food additive. It is indigestible and passes through the body without being absorbed, so it is not expected to have adverse health effects at typical consumption levels. International bodies like JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) have evaluated carnauba wax, and it is permitted for use in many countries.
