Tartaric Acid And Yellow 5 Lake

Tartaric acid is a naturally occurring organic acid found in fruits like grapes and tamarinds. It's often used as a food additive, and Yellow 5 Lake is a synthetic colorant derived from Yellow 5 (also known as tartrazine). The lake form is made by combining the colorant with aluminum hydroxide to create an insoluble powder.

Tartaric acid acts as an acidity regulator and antioxidant, contributing a sour taste. Yellow 5 Lake provides a bright yellow color. Together, they are often used in confectionery like chewing gum and mints to enhance flavor and appearance.

Tartaric acid is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. Yellow 5 (tartrazine) is an approved color additive by the FDA. Concerns have been raised about Yellow 5's potential to cause hyperactivity in some children, though scientific reviews have had mixed conclusions. The FDA has stated that the available scientific evidence does not establish a link between Yellow 5 and hyperactivity in the general population of children. The EU banned titanium dioxide as a food additive in 2022 after EFSA concluded in 2021 it could no longer be considered safe; titanium dioxide is NOT part of the dye phase-out. FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Yellow 5, in April 2025.
