The Following: Natural & Artificial Crab Flavor

Natural and artificial crab flavor is a blend of natural extracts and synthetic compounds designed to mimic the taste of real crab meat. These flavors can be derived from natural sources like shellfish or created chemically in a lab to replicate specific taste profiles.

Manufacturers use natural and artificial crab flavor to enhance or impart a crab taste to various food products, especially those that do not contain real crab or contain very little. It is commonly found in imitation crab meat, seafood snacks, sauces, and some processed fish dishes.

Natural and artificial flavors are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as intended. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated many flavor compounds. While generally considered safe in the amounts used in food, some individuals may have sensitivities or allergies to specific flavor components. Evidence regarding long-term health effects of complex flavor mixtures at typical consumption levels is limited.
