Blue 2 And Blue 1

Blue 1 (also known as Brilliant Blue FCF) and Blue 2 (also known as Indigotine or Indigo Carmine) are synthetic color additives. These organic dyes are typically manufactured from petroleum.

These dyes are added to foods to give them blue or blue-green colors. They are frequently used in candies, chewing gum, baked goods, and beverages to make them more visually appealing.

Blue 1 and Blue 2 are approved by the FDA as food additives. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes Blue 1 and Blue 2. JECFA has evaluated both Blue 1 and Blue 2 and set acceptable daily intakes. Some research has looked into a possible link between synthetic food dyes and hyperactivity in children, but the evidence is mixed, and major health organizations have not definitively concluded a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
