Blue 2 And Red 40

Blue 2 (also known as Indigotine) and Red 40 (also known as Allura Red AC) are synthetic color additives. Blue 2 is derived from indigo, while Red 40 is a petroleum-based dye. Both are manufactured through chemical synthesis.

These dyes are added to foods to impart blue and red colors, respectively, making products visually appealing. They are commonly found in a wide range of processed foods, including candies, beverages, baked goods, and dairy products.

Both Blue 2 and Red 40 are approved by the FDA as color additives for use in food. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes both Red 40 and Blue 2. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated both dyes and set acceptable daily intakes. Some studies have suggested a possible link between synthetic food dyes, including these, and hyperactivity in some children, though the evidence is mixed and regulatory bodies continue to review the data.
