Carmine Color

Carmine is a vibrant red colorant derived from cochineal insects, which are native to South America and Mexico. The insects are dried, crushed, and then processed to extract the carminic acid, which gives carmine its distinctive red hue.

Manufacturers use carmine to add a bright red or pink color to a wide variety of foods and beverages. It is commonly found in candies, baked goods, dairy products like yogurt and ice cream, and processed meats.

Carmine is approved by the FDA as a color additive. While generally recognized as safe (GRAS) at typical consumption levels, some individuals have reported allergic reactions, including hives and asthma symptoms, though these are considered rare. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated carmine and established an acceptable daily intake.
