What it is

Coconut water concentrate is made by removing water from coconut water. Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside young, green coconuts. The concentration process intensifies the natural flavor and sweetness of the coconut water.

Why it's used

Manufacturers use coconut water concentrate to add a natural coconut flavor and sweetness to products. It is commonly found in beverages like fruit juices, sports drinks, and ready-to-drink non-alcoholic beverages. It can also be used in some food products to enhance their tropical taste.

Health notes

Coconut water concentrate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It is a source of electrolytes like potassium. JECFA has evaluated coconut water and set an acceptable daily intake. No significant health controversies are associated with its consumption at typical levels.

Allergen info

Coconut is botanically a fruit, not a tree nut, and is not one of the FDA's nine major allergens. Therefore, coconut water concentrate is not a major allergen.
