Colors Added Blue 1

Blue 1, also known as FD&C Blue No. 1 or Brilliant Blue FCF, is a synthetic color additive. It is produced from petroleum-based raw materials through chemical synthesis.

This ingredient is used to impart a blue color to various food products. It is frequently found in candies, beverages, baked goods, and dairy products.

Blue 1 is approved by the FDA as a color additive for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Blue 1. JECFA and EFSA have both evaluated Blue 1 and set an acceptable daily intake. Some studies have explored a potential link between synthetic food dyes, including Blue 1, and hyperactivity in some children; however, the scientific evidence on this topic is mixed, and regulatory bodies like the FDA state that current evidence does not establish a causal link for the general population.
