Dried Garlic Flakes

Dried garlic flakes are made from fresh garlic cloves that have been dehydrated. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a plant in the onion family, native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran. The dehydration process concentrates the garlic's flavor and aroma, making it a convenient ingredient for cooking.

Manufacturers use dried garlic flakes to add a savory garlic flavor to a wide variety of foods without the moisture and perishability of fresh garlic. They are commonly found in seasoning mixes, spice blends, marinades, sauces, soups, and processed meats. Their concentrated flavor makes them a potent flavoring agent in many savory dishes.

Dried garlic flakes are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food ingredient. Garlic has been studied for various health effects, but regulatory bodies like the FDA, EFSA, and WHO have not established specific health claims for dried garlic flakes in typical food use. While some research suggests potential benefits, evidence is mixed and not conclusive for widespread health claims. JECFA has evaluated garlic preparations, but no specific ADI or numeric limit is set for dried garlic flakes.
