Extractive Of Paprika And Annatto

Extractive of paprika and annatto are natural colorants derived from the seeds of the annatto tree (Bixa orellana) and the fruits of the paprika plant (Capsicum annuum). These extracts are produced by solvent extraction or pressing to isolate the pigments, primarily bixin and norbixin from annatto, and capsanthin and capsorubin from paprika.

These extracts are used to impart yellow, orange, and red colors to a wide variety of food products. They are commonly found in processed cheeses, dairy products, baked goods, snacks, and meats, serving as a natural alternative to synthetic food dyes.

In the U.S., paprika oleoresin and annatto are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as food colorants. Both have been evaluated by international bodies like JECFA and EFSA. While generally considered safe, some individuals may experience mild allergic reactions, though this is rare. Evidence does not suggest significant health concerns at typical consumption levels.
