Fair Trade Certified Organic Cane Sugar

Cane sugar is a type of sugar made from sugarcane, a tall grass grown in tropical regions. It is produced by crushing sugarcane stalks to extract the juice, which is then purified, evaporated, and crystallized. 'Organic' means it is grown and processed without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and 'Fair Trade Certified' indicates it meets standards for ethical sourcing and sustainable production.

Manufacturers add cane sugar primarily as a sweetener to enhance the taste of foods and beverages. It also contributes to texture, browning, and acts as a preservative in some products. It is commonly found in desserts, baked goods, beverages, and processed foods.

Cane sugar is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a common food ingredient. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend no amount of added sugars, and at most 10 grams of added sugars per meal. JECFA has evaluated sugars as food components; its health effects are widely studied, particularly concerning excessive intake. Evidence suggests that high consumption of added sugars can contribute to health concerns, but moderate intake as part of a balanced diet is generally considered acceptable.
