FD&C Yellow

FD&C Yellow refers to a category of synthetic yellow food dyes, such as FD&C Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine) and FD&C Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF). These dyes are typically derived from petroleum and are produced through chemical synthesis in a laboratory.

These yellow dyes are added to foods to provide or enhance a yellow color, improve visual appeal, or ensure consistent color after processing. They are commonly found in beverages, baked goods, candies, snacks, and dessert toppings.

In the United States, FD&C Yellow No. 5 and FD&C Yellow No. 6 are FDA-approved color additives. The FDA announced in April 2025 a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. Some studies suggest a link between synthetic food dyes and hyperactivity in some children, particularly those with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), though evidence is mixed. The FDA states that for most children, there is no proven link. Both the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated these dyes and set acceptable daily intakes.
