FD&C Red No. 40, also known as Allura Red AC, is a synthetic red dye. It is manufactured from petroleum. This artificial color is one of the most commonly used food colorings in the United States.

Manufacturers add Red 40 to foods and beverages to impart a red color. It is frequently found in candies, cereals, snack foods, soft drinks, and baked goods to enhance their visual appeal.

FD&C Red No. 40 is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics. JECFA has evaluated it and set an acceptable daily intake. EFSA has also evaluated this additive. Some studies have suggested a possible link between synthetic food dyes, including Red 40, and hyperactivity in some children, though evidence is mixed and not conclusive. In April 2025, FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes Red 40.
