Jalapeno And Habanero Peppers

Jalapeño and habanero peppers are varieties of the chili pepper species *Capsicum annuum* and *Capsicum chinense*, respectively. They are known for their distinct heat levels, with habaneros generally being much hotter than jalapeños. Both are cultivated worldwide and are used fresh, dried, or pickled.

These peppers are primarily used to add heat and flavor to foods. They are common ingredients in salsas, hot sauces, marinades, and spice blends. Manufacturers also incorporate them into snacks, cheeses, and processed meats to provide a spicy taste profile.

Peppers like jalapeños and habaneros contain capsaicin, the compound responsible for their heat. While generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food ingredient, excessive consumption can cause digestive discomfort. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated capsaicinoids, but no specific numeric limits are set for these peppers as food ingredients. Research into the health effects of capsaicin is ongoing, with some studies suggesting potential benefits for pain relief and metabolism, while others note potential for irritation.
