Lactitol

Lactitol is a sugar alcohol, also called a polyol. It is made from lactose, a sugar found in milk. The process involves hydrogenating lactose, which adds hydrogen to the lactose molecule.

Lactitol is used as a low-calorie sweetener and bulking agent. It provides sweetness similar to sucrose but with fewer calories. It is often found in sugar-free or reduced-sugar products like candy, ice cream, and baked goods.

In the U.S., lactitol is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use as a sweetener. Like other sugar alcohols, consuming large amounts can have a laxative effect. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated lactitol and established an acceptable daily intake.
