What it is

Luo Han Guo extract, also known as monk fruit extract, is a natural sweetener derived from the monk fruit, a small, round fruit native to Southeast Asia. The fruit is dried and then extracted to create a concentrated sweetener.

Why it's used

It is used as a low-calorie sweetener in a variety of food and beverage products, including beverages, baked goods, dairy products, and supplements. Manufacturers use it to provide sweetness without adding significant calories or sugar.

Health notes

In the U.S., Luo Han Guo extract is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a sweetener. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated monk fruit extract and have established acceptable daily intake levels. Research suggests it does not significantly impact blood sugar levels, making it a popular choice for those managing sugar intake.

Allergen info

Luo Han Guo extract is not derived from any of the nine FDA major allergens and does not contain gluten.
