Manufacturers use corn syrup as a sweetener, to add moisture, and to improve the texture and shelf life of products. It is frequently found in baked goods, candies, jams, jellies, and ice cream.

Corn syrup is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. Like other sugars, excessive consumption of corn syrup can contribute to health issues associated with high sugar intake. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated corn syrup, and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also assesses food additives. Evidence regarding the health effects of added sugars, including corn syrup, is extensive and ongoing.
