Marshmallow

Marshmallows are a confection made primarily from sugar, corn syrup, and water. Gelatin, egg white, or a plant-based alternative is often added to give them their characteristic fluffy, chewy texture. They are typically cooked and then aerated before being molded into shapes.

Marshmallows are used as a sweetener and texturizer in a wide variety of foods. Their airy structure makes them ideal for confections like candy and chocolate bars, and they are also added to baked goods, ice cream, and cereal bars for sweetness and a soft texture.

Marshmallows are primarily composed of sugar and are considered a confectionary treat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists the common ingredients in marshmallows as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). International bodies like the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated many of the individual ingredients used in marshmallow production. While excessive sugar intake is linked to various health concerns, marshmallows themselves are not typically associated with specific adverse effects when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
