Mica-based Pearlescent Pigment

Mica-based pearlescent pigments are color additives that create a shimmering or metallic effect. They are made from mica, a naturally occurring mineral, which is coated with other food-safe colorants like titanium dioxide and/or iron oxides.

These pigments are used to add a decorative, shiny, or pearlescent appearance to foods. They are commonly found in products such as candy, chocolate, baking decorations, and dessert toppings.

In the United States, mica-based pearlescent pigments are approved by the FDA as color additives for specific food uses. They are generally considered safe when used as permitted. JECFA has evaluated titanium dioxide and iron oxides, which are components of these pigments, and set acceptable daily intakes. EFSA concluded in 2021 that titanium dioxide, a component of this pigment, could no longer be considered safe as a food additive, leading to its ban in the EU; however, titanium dioxide remains permitted as a food additive by the FDA and is not part of the FDA's planned phase-out of petroleum-based synthetic dyes.
