Organic Maqui

Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) is a small, dark purple berry native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina. The berries are harvested from the maqui shrub and are typically processed into a powder or extract for use in food products. They are known for their vibrant color and antioxidant content.

Maqui is often used as a natural colorant and a source of antioxidants in beverages, smoothies, and health supplements. Manufacturers add it to products like energy drinks, nutritional shakes, and snacks to enhance their visual appeal and perceived health benefits.

Maqui berry extract is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food ingredient. It is a source of anthocyanins, which are antioxidants. While some studies suggest potential health benefits associated with maqui berry consumption, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, more research is needed to confirm these effects in humans. JECFA has evaluated maqui berry extract, but did not set a numeric limit (ADI not specified).
