Organic Yerba Mate Extract

Organic Yerba Mate Extract is a concentrated liquid or powder derived from the leaves of the yerba mate plant (Ilex paraguariensis), a shrub native to South America. The leaves are typically dried, roasted, and then extracted using water or other solvents to isolate its active compounds, including caffeine and antioxidants.

Manufacturers use organic yerba mate extract primarily as a source of natural caffeine and flavor in beverages like energy drinks, teas, and sodas. It can also contribute antioxidant properties and a unique, slightly bitter taste profile to snack bars and other food products.

Organic yerba mate extract is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It contains caffeine, which can have stimulant effects. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated yerba mate, but no specific numeric limits are typically provided for extracts in this context. Research on yerba mate suggests potential antioxidant benefits, but more studies are needed to confirm these effects and understand long-term impacts.
