Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener made from two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is synthesized chemically.

Aspartame is used to sweeten a variety of foods and beverages, especially those labeled 'diet' or 'sugar-free.' It is commonly found in diet sodas, sugar-free chewing gum, gelatin desserts, and some yogurts.

The FDA considers aspartame safe for the general population when consumed within acceptable daily intake levels. However, individuals with the rare genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) must avoid it because they cannot metabolize phenylalanine. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated aspartame and found it safe. Some studies have explored potential links between aspartame and health issues, but major regulatory agencies have concluded the evidence does not support these concerns for the general population.
