Rebaudioside-a Stevia Leaf Extract

Rebaudioside-A is a sweet compound extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It is one of the main sweet compounds found in stevia leaves, along with stevioside. The extraction process involves purifying the stevia leaf to isolate these sweet compounds.

Manufacturers use Rebaudioside-A as a high-intensity sweetener, providing sweetness with very few calories. It is often used in beverages, dairy products, desserts, and tabletop sweeteners. Its intense sweetness means only small amounts are needed to achieve the desired taste.

Rebaudioside-A is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a sweetener. Both the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated steviol glycosides, including Rebaudioside-A, and found them safe for consumption within acceptable limits. Studies on stevia extracts at typical consumption levels have not shown significant adverse health effects.
