Red #40 Aluminum Lake is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Red #40. JECFA has evaluated Red #40 and set an acceptable daily intake, and EFSA has also evaluated it. There has been mixed evidence regarding a potential link between synthetic food colors, including Red #40, and hyperactivity in some children; the FDA states that available scientific evidence does not support a causal link for the general population but acknowledges that some children may be sensitive.
