Red & Green Nonpareils

Nonpareils are tiny, decorative sprinkles made primarily from sugar, starch, and food colorings. They are typically formed into small, spherical shapes and then dried to create a crunchy texture.

Manufacturers add nonpareils to foods primarily for visual appeal and decoration. They are commonly used to adorn baked goods like cookies, cakes, and cupcakes, as well as candies, ice cream, and snack mixes to add color and texture.

Nonpareils themselves are generally considered safe. However, the red and green colors typically come from synthetic food colorings, which are approved by the FDA as food additives. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including common red and green colors like Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, and Green 3. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated many synthetic food colorings and set acceptable daily intakes. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food colorings and hyperactivity in some children, but the evidence is mixed and further research is ongoing.
