Refined Sea Salt

Refined sea salt is a mineral composed mainly of sodium chloride, which is essential for life. It is produced by evaporating seawater, leaving behind salt crystals. The term 'refined' indicates that it has undergone processing to remove impurities and achieve a consistent texture.

Manufacturers add refined sea salt primarily as a flavor enhancer to make foods taste better. It also acts as a preservative, helping to extend the shelf life of many products by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It is commonly found in seasoning mixes, snacks, processed foods, and marinades.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) generally recognizes salt, including refined sea salt, as safe (GRAS). Sodium, a component of salt, is an essential nutrient needed for proper nerve and muscle function and maintaining fluid balance. However, high sodium intake is a public health concern, as it is linked to increased blood pressure in some individuals. The FDA's Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated sodium chloride as a basic food ingredient rather than an additive requiring an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI).
