What it is

Sour cherry juice concentrate is made by removing water from sour cherry juice. This process intensifies the natural color and flavor of the cherries. It is used to add a concentrated cherry taste and color to various products.

Why it's used

Manufacturers use sour cherry juice concentrate to add a tart cherry flavor and a deep red color to foods and beverages. It is commonly found in fruit juices, nectars, fruit drinks, sodas, and flavored waters.

Health notes

Sour cherry juice concentrate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It is a source of antioxidants, like anthocyanins, which have been studied for potential anti-inflammatory effects. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated cherry juice and its components. Evidence on health benefits is ongoing, and typical consumption levels are not associated with adverse effects.

Allergen info

Not a major allergen. Sour cherry juice concentrate is derived from fruit and does not contain any of the nine FDA major allergens or gluten.
