Tartrazine And Blue 1

Tartrazine (also known as Yellow 5) and Blue 1 (also known as Brilliant Blue FCF) are synthetic color additives. They are chemically manufactured rather than being derived from natural sources, produced through complex chemical processes.

Manufacturers add these dyes to foods to impart or enhance their color, making products more visually appealing. They are commonly found in a wide range of processed foods, including candies, beverages, baked goods, and snack foods.

Both Tartrazine (Yellow 5) and Blue 1 are approved color additives by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA announced in April 2025 a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes both Yellow 5 and Blue 1. While some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food dyes and hyperactivity in some children, the FDA states that scientific evidence does not show a causal link for the general population. Both JECFA and EFSA have evaluated these color additives.
