With FD&C Blue #1

FD&C Blue #1 is a synthetic food coloring. It is produced from petroleum-based raw materials through chemical synthesis.

This dye is used to impart a bright blue color to a variety of food products. It is commonly found in candies, beverages, baked goods, and frozen desserts like ice cream and popsicles.

FD&C Blue #1 is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics. JECFA has evaluated it and set an acceptable daily intake. EFSA has also evaluated it. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes Blue 1. Some studies have explored a potential link between synthetic food dyes and hyperactivity in some children, but the evidence is mixed; the FDA states that for most children, there is no demonstrated link between color additives and behavioral effects.
