Young Green Jackfruit

Young green jackfruit is the unripe fruit of the jackfruit tree, native to South and Southeast Asia. It has a neutral flavor and a firm, meat-like texture when cooked. The fruit is typically harvested before it ripens and is often canned or brined for preservation.

Manufacturers use young green jackfruit as a plant-based meat alternative due to its shreddable texture, which mimics pulled pork or chicken. It is commonly found in vegan and vegetarian dishes like tacos, curries, sandwiches, and stir-fries. Its neutral taste allows it to absorb the flavors of sauces and spices.

Young green jackfruit is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It is a source of dietary fiber and various vitamins and minerals. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated many food ingredients, but specific evaluations for young green jackfruit as a standalone ingredient are not widely publicized. It is not associated with significant health controversies when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
