Blue #1 Aluminum Lake

Blue #1 Aluminum Lake is a synthetic blue color additive. It is made by combining the dye Blue #1 (also known as Brilliant Blue FCF) with an aluminum hydroxide base, which makes the color insoluble in water. This process creates a "lake" pigment.

Manufacturers add Blue #1 Aluminum Lake to provide a bright blue color to foods. It is often used in candies, baked goods, snacks, beverages, and dairy products. Its insoluble nature makes it suitable for products where color migration is undesirable.

Blue #1 Aluminum Lake is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Blue 1. JECFA has evaluated Brilliant Blue FCF (Blue #1) and set an acceptable daily intake. EFSA has also evaluated Brilliant Blue FCF. Some studies have explored a potential link between synthetic food colors, including Blue #1, and hyperactivity in some children. However, the FDA states that scientific evidence does not show a causal link for the general population, though it acknowledges that certain children may be sensitive.
