C Blue#1

FD&C Blue No. 1, also known as Brilliant Blue FCF, is a synthetic food coloring. It is produced from petroleum-based raw materials through chemical synthesis.

Manufacturers add FD&C Blue No. 1 to give foods a vibrant blue color. It is commonly found in candies, baked goods, beverages, and dairy products like ice cream.

FD&C Blue No. 1 is an FDA-approved color additive for food, drugs, and cosmetics. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Blue No. 1. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated it and set an acceptable daily intake. While generally considered safe at typical intake levels, some studies suggest a possible link to hyperactivity in sensitive children, though the evidence is mixed.
