Cooked Minnesota Grown Wild Rice

Wild rice is the grain of four species of grasses native to North America, particularly the Great Lakes region. It is harvested from shallow lakes and slow-moving streams. The harvested grains are then cooked, often by parboiling and then steaming or roasting, to make them ready for consumption or use in food products.

Wild rice is primarily used as a flavorful and texturally interesting grain in a variety of dishes. Manufacturers add it to enhance the taste and appearance of products like sausages, soups, side dishes, and pilafs. Its nutty flavor and chewy texture make it a popular ingredient for adding a gourmet touch to convenience foods.

Wild rice is a whole grain and a source of fiber, protein, and various micronutrients. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for food use. No specific health concerns are associated with typical consumption of wild rice. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have not specifically evaluated wild rice as a food additive, as it is a whole food ingredient.
