Corn syrup solids are a dried form of corn syrup, which is made from corn starch. The starch is broken down into simpler sugars, primarily glucose, through a process called hydrolysis. The resulting liquid corn syrup is then dried to remove most of its water, creating a powdered or granular product.

Manufacturers add corn syrup solids to foods for several reasons, including to provide sweetness, add body, and prevent sugar crystallization. They also help to bind ingredients together and improve texture in many products. You can find them in snack bars, dry dinner mixes, and various prepared foods.

Corn syrup solids are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a type of sugar, they provide calories and are considered an added sugar in foods. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030) recommend no amount of added sugars, and at most 10 grams of added sugars per meal. JECFA (the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) and EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) have not set specific acceptable daily intake limits for corn syrup solids, as they are considered a food ingredient rather than a food additive requiring such evaluation.
