Key Lime Yogurt Coating

Key Lime Yogurt Coating is a sweet, tangy layer applied to snack foods. It is typically made from a blend of sugar, vegetable oils (often palm kernel oil), yogurt powder, and key lime flavoring, along with emulsifiers and stabilizers. This mixture is melted and then used to enrobe items like pretzels or dried fruit, solidifying into a smooth, creamy shell.

Manufacturers use Key Lime Yogurt Coating to add a distinctive sweet and tart key lime flavor, a creamy texture, and an appealing visual finish to snack products. It is commonly found on confectionery items such as pretzels, nuts, dried fruits, and snack mixes, enhancing their palatability and shelf life by providing a protective layer.

As a composite food ingredient, Key Lime Yogurt Coating contributes to the caloric, fat, and added sugar content of foods. The US Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030) recommend no specific amount of added sugars, and advise keeping saturated fat intake below 10% of daily calories. The individual components of the coating, such as yogurt powder, sugars, fats, and flavorings, are regulated by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) substances or approved food additives. JECFA and EFSA evaluate individual food additives, not composite coatings.
