It is commonly found in barbecue sauces, marinades, processed meats like jerky and sausages, snack foods, and seasonings. Its use allows for consistent flavor delivery and can be more cost-effective than traditional smoking.

Liquid smoke flavor is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a flavoring agent. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated smoke flavorings. While some studies have raised concerns about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke-derived products, manufacturers typically use processes to minimize these compounds. At typical consumption levels, it is not associated with adverse health effects.
