Muscovado Sugar

Muscovado sugar is a type of unrefined whole cane sugar. It is made from the juice of sugar cane, which is boiled to evaporate most of the water. Unlike refined white sugar, muscovado retains its molasses content, giving it a characteristic dark color and moist texture.

Manufacturers use muscovado sugar primarily as a sweetener, adding a rich, slightly smoky, and caramel-like flavor to foods. Its moist texture also helps in baked goods. It is commonly found in candies, cookies, baked goods, and marinades.

Muscovado sugar is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a sweetener. It contains trace amounts of minerals like iron and potassium, but not in significant amounts to impact health at typical consumption levels. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated sugars, but specific evaluations for muscovado are not widely publicized. Evidence does not suggest significant health differences compared to other sugars at equivalent intake levels.
