Natural Dairy Flavors

Natural dairy flavors are derived from dairy products like milk or cheese through processes such as fermentation or aging. These processes break down proteins and fats into smaller compounds that create specific flavor profiles. The resulting flavorings are concentrated and used to enhance the taste of foods.

Manufacturers add natural dairy flavors to foods to impart or intensify dairy notes, such as cheesy or creamy tastes. They are commonly found in savory products like pasta sauces, cheese-flavored snacks, soups, and prepared meals. These flavors can help create a richer, more authentic dairy taste without adding significant amounts of actual dairy ingredients.

Natural dairy flavors are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. They are composed of compounds naturally found in dairy products. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated flavorings, and while specific evaluations for 'natural dairy flavors' as a broad category are not always detailed, the individual components are generally considered safe at typical consumption levels. No significant health controversies are associated with their use.
