Organic Pomegranate Juice

Organic pomegranate juice comes from the fruit of the pomegranate tree, Punica granatum. The juice is extracted from the arils, which are the juicy seeds within the fruit. It is often processed to remove seeds and pulp, then pasteurized for shelf stability.

Manufacturers use organic pomegranate juice primarily for its tart, fruity flavor and vibrant color. It is commonly found in beverages like juices and smoothies, salad dressings, yogurt, and fruit spreads. Its natural sweetness also contributes to the overall flavor profile of products.

Organic pomegranate juice is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a food ingredient. It contains antioxidants, such as punicalagins and anthocyanins, which are compounds studied for potential health benefits. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated pomegranate extract, but not specifically the juice for regulatory limits. Research into the health effects of pomegranate juice is ongoing, with some studies suggesting benefits for heart health, but more research is needed to confirm these effects.
