Spice Extract

Spice extract is a concentrated liquid or solid flavoring derived from spices. It is made by steeping spices in a solvent, such as alcohol or water, to extract their aromatic compounds. The solvent is then removed, leaving behind a potent essence of the original spice.

Manufacturers use spice extracts to add or enhance the flavor of foods without adding the bulk of the original spice. They are commonly found in processed foods like soups, sauces, marinades, and seasoning mixes, providing a consistent and intense taste profile.

Spice extracts are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as flavoring agents. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated many flavoring substances, and spice extracts are typically considered safe when used in the small amounts found in food. Evidence does not suggest adverse health effects from typical consumption of foods containing spice extracts.
