White Icing: Powdered Sugar

Powdered sugar, also known as confectioners' sugar or icing sugar, is granulated white sugar that has been finely ground into a powder. It is typically made by milling granulated sugar with a small amount of cornstarch to prevent clumping. The fine texture gives it a smooth consistency when mixed with liquid.

Powdered sugar is primarily used as a sweetener and texturizer in baking and confectionery. Its fine powder dissolves easily, making it ideal for creating smooth icings, frostings, glazes, and fillings. It is also used to dust baked goods and in candies.

Powdered sugar is recognized as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA for use as a sweetener. Like other sugars, excessive intake can contribute to increased calorie consumption and potential health issues associated with high sugar diets. The WHO has recommended limiting intake of free sugars. JECFA has evaluated it and set an acceptable daily intake.
