Organic Turmeric

Turmeric is a vibrant yellow-orange spice derived from the root of the *Curcuma longa* plant, native to Southeast Asia. It is typically dried and ground into a powder for use in cooking and as a coloring agent. The active compound in turmeric is curcumin, which is responsible for its color and many of its properties.

Turmeric is primarily used as a natural coloring agent, giving foods a warm yellow-orange hue, and as a spice to add a mild, earthy, peppery flavor. It is commonly found in curry powders, mustards, cheeses, soups, and baked goods. Manufacturers also use it to enhance the visual appeal and taste profile of various savory and sweet products.

Turmeric, and its active compound curcumin, has been studied for various health effects, though research is ongoing and often mixed. The FDA recognizes turmeric as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use as a food ingredient. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated turmeric and curcumin, but they have not set specific numeric limits for intake. Some studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, but more high-quality human research is needed to confirm these effects at typical dietary intake levels.
