Red 40 And Blue 1

Red 40 (Allura Red AC) and Blue 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF) are synthetic color additives. They are produced from petroleum and are used to impart red and blue colors, respectively, to various products.

These dyes are added to foods and beverages primarily to enhance their visual appeal, making them more attractive to consumers. They are commonly found in items like candy, soda, yogurt, and baked goods.

Both Red 40 and Blue 1 are FDA-approved color additives for use in food. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated both dyes and set acceptable daily intakes. Some studies have suggested a link between consumption of certain artificial food colors, including Red 40 and Blue 1, and hyperactivity in some children, though the evidence is mixed. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Red 40 and Blue 1.
