Red 40 & Yellow 6

Red 40 (Allura Red AC) and Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF) are synthetic color additives. They are petroleum-derived and are among the most commonly used artificial food dyes in the United States.

These dyes are added to foods to impart or enhance color, making products visually appealing. They are frequently found in a wide range of processed foods, including candies, baked goods, beverages, snacks, and cereals.

Red 40 and Yellow 6 are approved color additives by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Red 40 and Yellow 6, from food products. JECFA has evaluated both Red 40 and Yellow 6 and set acceptable daily intakes. EFSA has also evaluated these dyes. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food dyes, including Red 40 and Yellow 6, and hyperactivity in some children; however, evidence remains mixed, and regulatory bodies continue to review the scientific literature.
