Silicon

Silicon is a naturally occurring element found in rocks, sand, and soil. In food, it is often added in the form of silicon dioxide, a synthetic compound made from silicon and oxygen. Silicon dioxide is commonly used as an anti-caking agent.

Manufacturers add silicon dioxide to powdered foods to prevent them from clumping together, ensuring a free-flowing texture. It is frequently found in seasoning mixes, salts, and powdered beverage mixes.

Silicon dioxide is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as an anti-caking agent. It passes through the digestive system largely unabsorbed. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated silicon dioxide, but no specific numeric limits for intake were set. Current research does not indicate adverse health effects from typical dietary exposure.
